THE FOCUS

My web-case is centered around Belo Horizonte, the sixth largest city in Brazil, and their bid to tackle chronic hunger. It is a powerful commercial center, making it a serious industrial producer and contender. According to the Journal of Urban History, Belo Horizonte was one of the first centrally planned urban centers in Brazil. Belo was founded on an optimistic promise, with “political backers and urban planners viewed controlled land development as providing a clean break with the past and creating an industrial, Eurocentric modern future1“. Belo is a city of culture and history. Even though their economy is booming, Belo Horizonte has managed to mitigate the affects of pollution, and had made bold strides in combatting the climate crisis. Belo is also an important cultural center and hub, the home of several museums, conservatories, colleges, and primary and secondary schools. It has also made efforts to make public transportation more acessible, building a subway/metro infrastructure that snakes through the entire city. As of 2022, the population, including the metro area, stands at 5,414,701.2
